Making Waves in Manotick: A Spotlight on Beth’s on The Bay
Summer on the Rideau River brings paddlers, kayakers, and nature lovers out in full force — but few experiences feel as personal as a visit to Beth’s on The Bay. Tucked along the shoreline just off Manotick Main Street, this home-based paddle board and kayak rental business offers more than just equipment — it’s a warm welcome to the water, guided by one of the most community-minded locals around.
What began as a retirement project has quickly become a go-to spot for residents and visitors looking to enjoy Manotick’s natural beauty from the water.
From Lifeguard to Local Business Owner
Long before launching Beth’s on The Bay, Beth was most at home near the water — teaching swimming lessons, guiding canoe trips, and working in child care. That mix of hands-on instruction and nurturing support now forms the heart of her business: helping others feel safe and confident while trying something new.
At first, it was just her own kayaks and paddle boards. But as more people asked to borrow them, the concept of a small rental service began to take shape. With her formal training and a desire to stay active in retirement, Beth brought it to life as a business.
Today, Beth’s on The Bay is a family-run effort and has expanded their team. Granddaughter Ainsley, along with team members Mason and Rob are hands on with paddles, boats, boards and customer service, her daughter-in-law Meghan, handles the tech side of things, while Beth remains the heart of the operation — greeting paddlers, fitting life jackets, and encouraging anyone stepping onto a board for the first time.
Kayak & Paddle Board Rentals on the Rideau River
Whether you’re a first time paddler or returning for another season, Beth’s on The Bay makes it easy to get out and explore the Rideau. Rentals suit all ages and comfort levels, with options including:
- Single, youth, and double kayaks
- Single, double, and family paddle boards (up to 1,000 lbs capacity)
- Fishing attachments available
- Pet-friendly gear, including dog life jackets
Walk-ins are welcome (though pre-booking is appreciated), and everything you need is included — from life jackets to waterproof phone pouches and whistles. Beth provides a friendly safety briefing, explaining how to launch, adjust your paddle, and stay clear of the dam and navigate the main boating channel.
More than just handing off equipment, she ensures each paddler feels comfortable and prepared before heading out.
A Business Built on Community Spirit
Beth’s love for Manotick shines through in every part of her business. She shops local — supporting businesses like Manotick Home Hardware and Manotick Office Pro — and gives back to the community through gift certificate donations and complimentary team-building sessions for local groups like the Rideau Valley Child Care Centre and The Village of Manotick Animal Hospital.
Her fleet can accommodate up to 22 paddlers, making it a popular choice for summer outings, wellness events, and group get-togethers. For Beth, it’s about more than just paddling — it’s about creating shared experiences on the water.
More Than Rentals: Events & Experiences
Beth has provided rentals and helped facilitate some of Manotick’s most memorable on-the-water events. From sunset paddles and senior nights to paddleboard yoga in partnership with Riverside Yoga.
Custom outings are welcome too — whether it’s a quiet sunrise paddle, fishing session, or private group rental. Beth’s on the Bay is open seven days a week and can accommodate custom bookings outside of regular hours.
Helping People Build Confidence on the Water
One of Beth’s favourite parts of running the business is helping people try paddling for the first time — especially newcomers to Canada who may be discovering the Rideau and Canadian summers for the first time.
She walks guests through paddling techniques, helps adjust gear, and ensures everyone — swimmers and non-swimmers alike — feels secure before setting off. It’s this personal, hands-on approach that keeps guests coming back.
