It Takes a Village: A Spotlight on Manotick’s Culture, Parks & Recreation Association
In a village like Manotick, community isn’t just a concept—it’s a way of life. And few organizations embody that spirit more than the Manotick Culture Parks and Recreation Association (MCPRA).
Rooted in Community
Before MCPRA officially formed in 2011, its roots were already deep—planting trees and advocating for public green space as part of the Manotick Community Association. Over time, their focus shifted toward expanding access to parks and recreation. Since then, MCPRA has become a driving force behind some of Manotick’s most beloved amenities.
From the Mike O’Neil Arena expansion to the construction of the Mahogany Dock, and improvements to Centennial Park, MCPRA has been behind many major community upgrades. Most recently, they celebrated the addition of a new pump track, proving again their commitment to responsive, resident-focused improvements.
Projects with Purpose
MCPRA’s work is driven by intention – based on what the community wants and needs. Their work includes operating two outdoor rinks (McLean and Centennial Parks), with a third on the way in Mahogany Estates. Last winter, thanks to ideal weather and tireless volunteers, both rinks were in operation from late December through early March.
They also support local learning and environmental stewardship through programs like the Arena Gardens Maintenance Project, enlisting schools, and community groups to care for the gardens surrounding the community centre. MCPRA volunteers also undertake joint initiatives with the City of Ottawa Forestry staff to plant new trees in Manotick parks.
This spring they are rallying residents for a “Cleaning the Capital” day on May 10th, targeting five local parks with the help of volunteers. There’s still time to join in!
The Water Access Initiative
Manotick is a riverside village—and access to the water matters. The Water Access Initiative (WAI) is MCPRA’s current flagship project, designed to improve the safety, visibility, and usability of river access points for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming.
They’ve narrowed down 12 potential access sites and are working on developing improvement plans, budgets, and hosting a community consultation this fall to gather feedback before finalizing the designs.
Chic Time in the ‘Tick: Where Fun Meets Fundraising
The heart of MCPRA’s fundraising is the glamorous and community-powered event: Chic Time in the ‘Tick, happening this year on May 23, 2025, at the Manotick Curling Club. This women-for-women evening features dinner, dancing, and an impressive silent and live auction—all to raise funds for local initiatives.
With past events raising over $65,000 for the Mahogany Dock before COVID, last year’s event raised $25,000 for the WAI project; this year’s goal of $25,000 will also be directed towards the WAI project. Title sponsors like Manotick Home Hardware and Royal LePage Team Realty’s Sue Kennedy have returned to support Chic Time fundraising, with The Wright Team joining this year as new Friends of Chic Time. Want to attend? A few tickets are still available— save your seat today! Volunteers and auction item donations are always welcome.
Looking Ahead
MCPRA’s vision for Manotick’s future includes improved pathway connections for safer cycling and walking, greater equity in park access, and continued investment in sustainable, community-led projects. They’ve even secured city-funded insurance for 2025, freeing up even more of their resources for direct community impact.
Their programs are powered by people of all ages—families, retirees, students, and long-time residents who simply want to make Manotick a better place to live and enjoy.
As one executive member put it best during our conversation: “It takes a village!”
And in Manotick, that couldn’t be more true. From gardeners to rink volunteers, from event committees to cleanup crews—there’s always room for one more helping hand.
